It was no different than any other competition I have judged, i.e., 30 to 50% of the entries were of a quality you would not serve in your home. That may seem like a harsh statement, but at an AHA regional earlier this year, the Meads that were disqualified scored higher than those that were qualified. At a Sam Adams Longshot early this year, there were two German Rye beers and one tasted like a stale loaf of dark rye bread soaked in alcohol. Since I am a Republican, my preference is to charge less rather than more. But maybe we need to organize competitions to charge more (say $15) with a payout to all brews scoring 30 and above with sponsorship merchandise worth at least the entry fee, i.e., is this brew good enough that we should give the brewer her/his money back in merchandise?. Then again maybe I'm just overreacting to judging swill that leaves an astringent finish in my throat!
