In wine you >let it sit and let the obnoxious aromatics dissapate as we look at the color >hue and clarity. In beer we knock them down if on opening the bottle we >detect DMS that dissapears quickly. What are we trying to prove? My question also, the DMS should certainly be remaining? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Steven Davis Date: Sun, 09 Sep 2007 07:32:23 -0400 Subject: Call for Judges - Virginia Sports Hall of Fame Beer Blitz Saturday, October 6th, 2007 CASK will be assisting with the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum's inaugural Beer Blitz and Homebrew Competition in Portsmouth, Virginia. A fund-raiser for the Hall of Fame, the event includes a beer gala which will have food & beer provided by the Bier Garden, as well as a live band and other activities. In addition, the Hall of Fame is including an AHA/BJCP sanctioned homebrew contest during the event, which CASK has agreed to organize. Unlike anything you may have judged at before, this competition will take place in the evening, and will be partially open to the public. In addition, CASK and HRB&TS have been invited to set up tables to talk to the public about Homebrewing and provide samples. CASK is in despirite need of beer judges for this competition. If you are interested, please contact us at judges`at`colonialalesmiths.org . Due to the limited time to judge (7-11pm) and the number of categories (7), there will be only one flight, so we need plenty of judges. Preference will be given to BJCP judges, however there should still be seats at the tables or among the stewards for everyone to participate. For more details, please visit http://www.virginiasportshalloffame.com/beerblitz/index.html For out of town judges in need of overnight lodging, there will be a few local club members providing a limited number of housing opportunities, so please denote such when signing up, and we will do our best to attempt to accomodate. Also, while the event does have a cost to attend, all judges, stewards & volunteers will be admitted free of charge. This event is being put on as a fund raiser for a very good cause, and CASK hopes that others in the homebrew community can contribute. Cheers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Al Hazan Date: Sun, 9 Sep 2007 10:22:52 -0400 Subject: Malt Madness Homebrew Competition Results It is with great pleasure that I can announce the results of the Malt Madness homebrew competition which was held on September 8th at the Allentown Brew Works in Allentown, Pa. We had 276 entries from around the country, competing in 20 judging categories. =20 Congratulations to Benjamin Potts for his Best of Show winning Imperial IPA.  For complete results, please visit our website at http://www.lehighvalleyhomebrewers.org/.  Score sheets, ribbons and prizes should go out within the week. I also want to thank all the judges and stewards for giving their time on Saturday as well as to our generous prize sponsors.  Without these people, Malt Madness would not be possible. Finally, I want to give a special thank you to Jeff Fegley, Jeff DeAngelis and the entire staff at the Allentown Brew Works for hosting us in a spectacular competition venue.  Their generosity towards home brewers is unmatched and greatly appreciated. Al Hazan Malt Madness Competition Organizer ahazan`at`ptd.net ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Jon Tobey Date: Sun, 9 Sep 2007 08:24:05 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Fleeting Aromas Hmmm, we're back to wine. Well, of course you would never judge wine in such a poor glass as we judge beer. Also, in beer the carbonation opens, and dissipates, the nose that much faster. Finally, a lot of good judging is basically forensic - that is if we are trying to help people make better beer and not just choose the best beer. So you might detect something in the nose to help you with your diagnosis and suggestions for possible correction. Just another reason we should maybe be a little more educated as to the various components that make up the bouquet. My favorite beers have bouquets that go on and on. It is a continual challenge to make beers that have such a subtle, but powerful, distinction from other beers. How to capture those beneficial smells that persist through the scrubbing effects of fermentation and carbonation while preventing any off aromas? For people who have these skills, we are doing an injustice to their beers if we ignore that aspect of their efforts.
