Re: Real Beer (MeadGuild`at`aol.com) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Peed, John Date: Fri, 10 Aug 2007 17:35:30 -0700 Subject: Summation Some people favor keeping the word "real" in the BJCP purpose statement and some don't - the sampling isn't large enough to draw any conclusion other than that. One thing that's apparent to me, though, is that the inclusion of the word "real" is snobbish. I try not to read that into the arguments in favor, but you don't even have to read between the lines - it's pretty obvious. Some say, "So what if we're elitist?" I don't mind being pigeon holed as a beer snob, but I don't want to promote myself as one, and I don't think the BJCP is served positively by acting elitist. We're supposed to be learning and teaching here, not patting ourselves on the back about our knowledge of beer. The craft beer and home brew ranks have moved forward tremendously; isn't it about time we got the chip off our collective shoulder? I honestly think we could do without the snobbery - I find it counter-productive on a number of levels, including judging. Our purpose is to promote the appreciation of beer, period, is it not? =20 John Peed ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Al Hazan Date: Sat, 11 Aug 2007 07:24:56 -0400 Subject: Malt Madness Homebrew Competition This is the final announcement and last call for judges regarding the Lehigh Valley Homebrewers (LVHB), homebrew competition, Malt Madness, which will be held on Saturday, September 8th at the Allentown Brew Works in Allentown, Pa. "Real Beer" has an elitist ring to it that is not in keeping with the convivial reality of beer as most of us enjoy it. As others have pointed out, it also leaves mead and cider in limbo. I would place an emphatic vote that "Real Beer" be replaced by "Diverse Brews" in the statement of purpose. I think that leaves enough lexical room to embrace meads and ciders (although not technically brewed) and certainly includes saki. Later we can add coffee and tea if we like. As for CAMRA, they should have their own discussions at a few pubs. While I think "real" should go, "all beer" seems to me > to be excluding mead and cider (and Sake for that matter...Dave?). I agree with Lyle. Note that neither Mead nor Cider appear the BJCP mission statement. I attempt to compensate for that by trying to remember to always capitalize them, but not beer. When I went to work for my uncle who was in the nit-picking business, he told me to be careful when picking a nit because there are some nuts whose nits that are not worth picking. To me, the "real" nut has a nit worth picking. But to rephrase myself, "us Mead nuts have enough patience that we need not pick the 'Mead and Cider' nit." But, don't let that stop you from doing it for us. ;) Dick ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ***** Important Subscriber Information ***** To post a message to JudgeNet, send it to judge`at`synchro.com.
