(robert paolino) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Jim Lanning Date: Thu, 9 Aug 2007 17:25:54 -0700 Subject: Re: Real Beer To me beer is beer is beer is beer. Are gluten-free beers not real because they omit barley? Perhaps that can be argued. Are 3rd Category beers not real because they are brewed with soy, peas, etc.? That too could be argued. Are N/A beers not real because of the virtual non-existence of alcohol in them? Arguable as well. What is real? How is that defined by the BJCP? It is unquestionable what defines REAL when it comes to CAMRA. "The purpose of the Beer Judge Certification Program is to promote beer literacy and the appreciation of real beer, and to recognize beer tasting and evaluation skills." (Note: Beer appears three times in the purpose of the BJCP, but real only appears once. Hmmm.) If "real" can be well defined and retained in the purpose of the BJCP then perhaps a new acronym is in order. RBJCP! I'm with Tom Schmidlin on this one. Real in the BJCP purpose statement is questionable at best lacking definition. "Diverse" would better qualify the beers of the world. Jim Lanning ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Lyle C. Brown Date: Fri, 10 Aug 2007 05:59:08 -0400 Subject: Real beer - take 2 Francisco Jones suggests we use the term "all beer" instead of "real beer." Here I must disagree. While I think "real" should go, "all beer" seems to me to be excluding mead and cider (and Sake for that matter...Dave?). But to hear some of the objections to the use of the modifier, "real," I hope the advocates of deletion are also lobbying folks in Britain and Canada to change the name of their beer appreciation/education societies to "Campaign for Ale." :-) :-) :-) -- Now go have a beer, Bob Paolino "Are Canadians just Americans who carry hockey sticks instead of guns, or is there more to it than that?" --"This Canadian Existence" Wisconsin Public Radio ( ) ASCII ribbon campaign X against HTML e-mail: / \ Friends don't send friends HTML-bloated messages!
