Just to clarify things: 1. Our Treasurer is bonded, and has been for years. 2. We have comprehensive financial controls in place, including: a. Signature by one of our corporate officers (President, Vice President, Treasurer) on all checks, and two signatures on checks over $500. b. Monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports, distributed appropriately (the annual report is published on our website). c. Government paperwork accomplished as necessary to maintain our 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt status. d. Board votes on all budget items to authorize expenditure of funds. e. Monitoring of the annual budget vs. expenditures by the Board. 3. We have no intention of performing background checks on anyone. It's hard enough to monitor judges turning in substandard scoresheets! 4. If anyone is seriously interested in helping to improve policies and procedures such as these, we encourage you to run for Regional Representative (Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, South, and West are all up for election next time) or at least volunteer to help out in some capacity. Hint: we could really use some more exam graders. Thomas Date: Sat, 26 May 2007 11:33:37 -0400 Subject: background checks Re: "It's just a hobby." "Intrusive." etc. Mr. Slack allegedly embezzled something like 65 THOUSAND dollars. (http://www.bjcp.org/annual2004.html) That's not "hobby" level, and I don't find it "intrusive" to require that someone handling that amount of money volunteer for a check. If you don't want to be checked, what are you hiding? Your drug arrest in 1975 isn't going to prevent you holding office in the BJCP. :-) Bonding is probably a sufficient substitute, and our current treasurer is bonded. =Spencer in Ann Arbor ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: beerking1`at`comcast.net Date: Sun, 27 May 2007 00:22:40 +0000 Subject: Bonding works First, although I stand behind my original suggestion for background checks, I think bonding is a great alternate. Especially since bonding REQUIRES a background check to be in place. Second, I think many may have misunderstood what I meant by a simple background check. I was not referring to a full "background investigation," but just a background check. All I meant by this is a check of records held by law enforcement agencies nationwide for negative information in thier existing databases. Some might know this by the more specific name of "national agency check." Again, let me emphasize that I am happy that our treasurer is now bonded. This meets the same litmus test I was thinking of through a simple background check.
