Subject: Digest for the period 5/10/2007 - 5/11/2007 Date: Fri, 11 May 2007 01:02:34 -0400 Table of contents ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Puget Sound Pro-Am ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Jim Hinken Date: Thu, 10 May 2007 04:39:42 -0700 Subject: Puget Sound Pro-Am Greetings BJCP Judges, I wrote a message a few months back giving you a heads-up for judging for the Puget Sound Pro-Am. As we get closer to the event (to a point where we actually know what is happening in our lives in the next month), I'd like to send another request for judges with some additional information. =20 I am the president of the Boeing Employees Wine and Beer Makers Club. In partnership with several local clubs, we are kicking off the AHA/BJCP sanctioned Puget Sound Pro-Am Competition. The competition is aimed at providing award winning homebrew recipes to be brewed by Puget Sound breweries with the goal of bringing a gold medal back to Washington from the Great American Beer Festival's Pro-Am Competition. I have currently enlisted 6 breweries to brew recipes from the best of show round for this event (Elysian, Rogue, Diamond Knot, Big Horn/Ram, Harmon, and Powerhouse). Entry details for this event can be found at www.bewbc.org/pro-am . The competition has already drawn the attention of the American Homebrewer's Association for potential featured coverage so it promises to be a fun ground-breaking event! http://www.beertown.org/pdf/GABF07ProAm07.pdf Furthermore, we are scheduling an AHA membership rally (~Sept 22nd) at the Elysian Fields to celebrate the release of the beers. More details to come on that. =20 The entries for this competition are due June 6th (judges will be allowed to enter) and judging will be held on June 9th at Larry's Brewing Supply in Kent, WA (www.larrysbrewsupply.com . We are looking at starting judging at approximately 9 am (we would like judges to arrive at least a half an hour in advance). We will hold a morning judging session followed by lunch (which we will provide), and an afternoon session as necessary. =20 While we will be conducting a straight-forward stylistic evaluation of submitted beers, the judges will be given an extra degree of leeway in passing beers forward to the best of show round. First of all, the best stylistically correct beers will be passed onto the best of show round. In addition, judges will be allowed to recommend beers to pass forward which may not be stylistically perfect, but are incredibly good beers which the breweries might be interested in evaluating. These beers will not be considered for the technical best of show; however, we want them to be available for the brewers to select from. =20 In the later afternoon, we will conduct the best of show judging of the stylistically excellent beers. Additionally, the brewers from the participating breweries will converge and sample all of the best of show round beers to pick which beers they would like to brew. They may have some additional constraints (styles, ingredient constraints, AHA membership, etc.) which is why our goal is to provide them a great selection of beers to choose from to suit their needs. Later in the year, we are looking to have some fun tapping parties so keep your ears open for details. =20 If you are interested in judging in this special competition or would like some more information, please contact myself or our head judge, Jim Hinken 425-483-9324 (jim.hinken`at`verizon.net). You can also register online as a judge at: http://www.HordsOfFun.Com/hbc.rw/judgewiz.aspx?w=0313091822 That will help greatly with the event organization.
