It happens on a Saturday and will be held at Columbia Distributing from 9: a.m. to 2: p.m. (map: * http://tinyurl.com/2rbdzt*) We are expecting a really big turnout and need as many judges as possible this year. If you entered a beer, that's not a problem. You simply need to opt out of judging the category or categories you entered. If you decide to be a judge, please contact me via email or phone ( 503.890.2361) and I'll add your contact information to my list of judges. Also, if you're up to it, there is another judging the previous Saturday, April 21st in Seattle at the Pyramid Brewing Company. The person to contact on that one would be Eric Wilson whose email address is EJWilson`at`gte.net . Thank you all again for your continued help. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Cheers! Jeremie Landers Portland, Oregon --- Oregon Brew Crew | Competition Chairperson AHA Member S.N.O.B. Gros Date: Sun, 25 Mar 2007 21:01:50 -0700 Subject: style descriptions I wanted to comment on the recent discussion about the style guidelines being too broad, specifically for stouts. I know firsthand that the style committee struggles with two aims, which are sometimes competing: describe the "current state" of each style in both the amateur and professional arenas, and provide a comprehensive description of each style for the purposes of entering and judging at amateur competitions. While part of the mission statement of the BJCP is education, I think the primary purpose of the style guidelines should be for competitions. As such, each substyle should be fairly narrow, even if there are well-respected commercial beers that fall outside of the description. We certainly don't want to inhibit creativity in amateur or professional brewers, but when brewing for competition, there should be clearly defined targets at which to shoot. That would be the best way to minimize subjectivity during judging.
