Of course if you throw them away each competition, then glass is actually cheaper. It might be worth looking a little more closely at what can be recycled in your area beyond just what is accepted for regularly scheduled curbside recycling pickup. Although City of Madison (WI) curbside recycling is very limited in what plastics it accepts (certain #1, #2, #5), the recycling drop-off site for an adjoining municipality (city with a brewpub where we sometimes have competitions :-) ) in Dane County accepts plastics #1 through #7. (Presumably, their residents can do that curbside.) Recycling Drop-Off Site Acceptable Materials Yard Waste: * Grass clippings * Leaves * Weeds * Vegetable/plant matter * Hay/straw * small bark pieces/mulch Scrap Metal: * Auto parts * Bicycles * Pipes * Metal furniture * Metal door/window frames Single Stream Recyclables: * Corrugated cardboard and mixed paper * Newspaper * Magazines * Plastics #1-7 * Polystyrene (bagged packing peanuts & block styrofoam) * Glass bottles & jars * Aluminum * Tin Motor Oil: * Used motor oil * Used transmission oil Oil Filters: * Used oil filters --- Recycling or not, I still prefer glass for judging when possible.
