Subject: Plastic cup odor and recycling
>From Peter Garofalo in the previous JudgeNet:
"But many times we end up seeing the soft plastic ones
either because the organisers didn't know to specify
what to get, or because you get what the store has
when you're buying supplies. I don't know offhand
if one type is cheaper than the other, but cost
might influence the selection, too."
The soft plastic ones are almost always a lot cheaper.
But I for one NEVER buy those. (I also never use real
glass, but for a different reason -- there's no way
to wash them at our comp, and a 50 cent rental fee
would kill us.)
Anyway, for soft plastic cups -- avoid them! Here's why:
First off, there's clarity problem when you're judging.
Secondly, and most importantly, if you're concerned
about the plastic odor, soft plastic cups have FAR more
plastic odor than the clear, hard plastic ones.
The hard plastic, of course, has the problem of recycling.
I'm not sure the type plastic that the soft ones are
(I deem them unacceptable for judging, so the point
is moot for me), but a fair number of recycling centers
handle only Plastic 1 (PETE) and Plastic 2 (HDPE).
The hard cups are #6 (PS), or ours are anyway.
Your local recycler might not be able to handle them
and won't want them in the recycling bin. Check first!
By the way, you can reuse those hard, clear plastic
cups, but keep in mind that washing them in a dishwasher
can be problematic because they are too light to stay
in place when the water jets hit them, so many will be
upside down, needing more rinsing, etc.

They still won't let me have beer here at work at Purdue!
Hi Bob -- remember me from my very first judging experience at
Champagne-Urbana in Summer 2004? All those IPAs on a Saturday morning.....
My judge kit includes my glass. I haven't wasted a plastic cup in a
long long time. I've used more paper towels than I like to, and maybe
eventually I'll start taking some nice lint-free cotton cloths for
drying the glass. I have had fine success rinsing and wiping my little
glass. No waste (ok, the paper towels) and no dishwashers. Plus I
drink the rinse water. (And those of you who are thinking eeyew... it's
just beer flavored water. Flavored water of all kinds is tremendously
popular these days. Served in billions of one-use plastic bottles.....)

Subject: Sampler Glasses
The plastic sampling cups at competitions are probably around 3 oz. I'm
planning on ordering two Sampler Glass with either my name or my initials etched
on it and am thinking more like 4 to 5 oz. Does anyone have a personal
sampling glass. If so, how many ounces does it and what are its dimensions?
I have purchased etched beer glasses and wine glasses from esigns4u.com as
Christmas and wedding presents. If I can give them the dimensions, they can
get the glasses and etch two for me.
