It had to be said and they said it very well. Now can we get on with it? Are we homebrewqers or politicians? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Paul Mahoney Date: Sat, 13 May 2006 16:01:58 -0700 (PDT) Subject: CEP at AHA Judges: I just joined Judge-Net, and I feel as though I am coming into the middle of a family argument. Please forgive me if I step on any toes, or plow ground that has already been harvested to death! I am planning on taking the exam within the next 6 months (after lots of prodding by Dave Houseman), but my profession (attorney)and my family obligations limit the available time. I often cannot find the time to brew! Anyway, the point of my post: I was planning to attend several CEP sessions at the AHA conference in Orlando. I want to expand my knowledge in anticipation of taking the exam. Plus I saw it as a good way to rack up some points. So I sent an email to Gordon Strong, and I understood his reply to be that I could acquire points even tho I had not taken the exam (and was not officially a BJCP member). But then I read the email from Mark Tumarkin, which says that one cannot acquire retroactive points by attending these sessions. I am not challenging this decision. I just want to know what the rules are. I will still attend the sessions, whether or not I acquire points. Knowledge is good. I realize that I have a lot of studying to do to pass this exam. I have judged several competitions (e.g. Microfestivus in Roanoke, Virginia with Houseman and Ed Wolfe), and have been homebrewing for nearly a decade. Whether points are awarded or not, I hope to steward at the AHA to learn more about the process and what are the pitfalls. Running competitions for a 40 member club is a differnet animal than running one for several hunderd participants. Anyway, I hope I can begin to gather points even tho I have not yet taken the exam. But I understand the point of Mark's post. I just want to know what is allowed. Thanks. Paul Mahoney Roanoke, Va. GET OVER IT. Hi Dave. This seems like really good advice. But a funny thing happened. Remember the bad old days when the AHA was screwing up the BJCP and Home Brew Digest and was slightly less democratic than Equatorial Guinea. The head of the AHA and later its parent organization, the Association of Brewers (now Brewer's Association) was a guy named Charlie Papazian. You probably remember him. There were, like, 20 pictures of him in every issue of Zymurgy. Now this is the weird part. It's going to be hard to believe, but I was doing some research on the Internets and its turns out he's still the head of the Brewer's Association. Yeah, I know. Wow! It's hard to believe that the guy who was ultimately responsible for all the bad stuff could get away with it, but I swear to you I am telling the truth. You can look it up at irs.gov. He's still making a very comfortable living, too. Now that's I've brought this to your attention, I have every confidence that you and the other board members will swiftly take appropriate action and deal with this most fundamental problem. But until that time, I fear that your emphatic admonition to "GET OVER IT" is a bit premature.
