That could be, since Americans are notoriously sensitive (or proclaim to be) about gasoline prices. But I have to question this: > I have turned down several competition invites, because > I would have to pay over $100 in gas costs to drive to > and from the competition Oh my gawd, how far are you driving? Do you have a Hummer? By my calculations, at $3/gal and a modest 20 mpg, you're making a 666 mile round trip! At 25 mpg, it's 800+ miles. I think my time behind the wheel would certainly be more of a factor than the cost. I have judged both in Chicago and Ohio in the past. 177 miles to Westlake, OH from Michigan: $35 one-way, $70 round trip (ok, not $100). 311 miles to Chicago (yeah, it is far, but I do like to judge): $62 on-way, $124 round trip. If I have the time off, I don't mind driving, but it is getting to be pricey. We have a few competitions in Michigan, but I do like to get to the bigger events, like AHA first round and some of the bigger competitions, to get experience with more seasoned judges. I will probably be judging just in Michigan this year, because of the fuel prices.
