Just to keep this fresh in everyone's mind.... The 8th Annual UKG Drunk Monk Challenge will be held in 2 weeks - that's right - only 2 weeks from now!!! Most judging will occur on Saturday, March 11th, at Walter Payton's Roundhouse - America's Brewery, in Aurora IL, with Mead/Cider judging being conducted the night before at another local location. It is an AHA sanctioned competition, a qualifying event for MCAB, and a leg of Midwest Homebrewer of the Year. It's always a lot of fun, and we usually have a rather large number of entries (500-600) - so we're looking for a lot of judges to help us out! In particular, we are looking for qualified Mead/Cider judges to help out on Friday night. Last year we had in the neighborhood of 70 meads and ciders to evaluate. We expect the same or more this year. We have beds for brewers, the traditional "Gumbofest" party the night before the competition where one can consume to their hearts content, special DMC glassware for all judges and stewards, good food for breakfast and lunch the day of judging, a fantastic raffle (Our raffles are truly the largest ever seen at a homebrew competition!), and of course great camaraderie and cheer. We really do appreciate the judge's dedication of time and effort to help us out, and we want to make sure that you don't go away disappointed! So - if you are interested in judging at the DMC, please contact me by e-mail at jformanek`at`griffithlaboratories.com, or by phone at (630) 378-4694. Cheers! I didn't catch this until after the first mailing. I mentioned this to my Oregon friend Ted who is affiliated with the Slurp & Burp in Estacata on March 25th and he had the Judge Coordination send me their List. It's the same short list as well - only Oregon judges. I find this a bit odd; why limit the amount of potential candidates? The Cascadia Cup and the Slurp & Burp HBCs are large enough to draw in both judges and entries from neighboring states. If fact, large events depend on judges from outside the area to fill the ranks and complete the event sooner. And I would add that in the past up to a quarter of our entries have come from Oregon, as I'm sure our southern cousins receive a large portion from Washington. Is there a reason why we are bound to our own state? I fear to ask if this is the case with good events in Rhode Island or Connecticut or Delaware. Please kind Sirs, give us more :o) BTW - Last call to register for the Cascadia Cup! Please register by Feb 27th. Due to the limits inherited, we will accept out-of state-entries up till March 1st.
