Should there be sufficient interest that could however happen. Feedback from competition organizers and message flow on this forum, HBD, TechTalk and other beer discussion groups are used to judge interest. As for where to enter, yes specialty would be an appropriate place. But unless the resulting "-wine" takes it entirely out of the barleywine category, that too would be OK. An extreme wheat-wine might still fit there well because the character of the wheat is close to barley, and the category is judged as received by the judges with recipes. But a 100% rye beer would certainly fall outside the norm for a barleywine (I've had one) and would better be judged as a specialty.
