On January 26th, I posted this: --- snip --- A second announcement is that we will be holding a BJCP exam in conjunction with the AHA National Homebrew competition in Baltimore. Possible dates are June 16th (the beginning of the conference), and June 18th (the Saturday morning during the conference, starting at 9 a.m.). If you would like to register, please let me know, along with your date preference. --- snip --- I received a few responses, but most of the interest came from local judges in the Baltimore/DC area. The consensus was to have the exam on Saturday morning to avoid conflicts with work and judging, and that date has been posted on the BJCP exam page since April. Although we did not get any publicity in the schedule of events, Phil Sides reserved a room at the Holiday Inn while he was coordinating myriad other conference activities. Thanks again, Phil! We can accomodate a few drop-ins for this exam, but it would be helpful if you let me know in advance so that I have enough beers for the tasting portion. This is a summary of some points raised on the internet newsgroup rec.crafts.meadmaking. It has been suggested that Maple Syrup, Yeast, and water is an Acer Mead. But without honey, is it really a Mead? I think not, but it is truly the nectar of the Gods. Would a gallon of Maple Syrup and a quart of honey qualify as a Mead? I think maybe so I'd like an answer Would a gallon of Maple Syrup and an ounce of Buckwheat honey for color qualify as a Mead? I think not, but it might pass for one because of the sharp character of Buckwheat honey. Opinions appreciated. HCCP is a free windows-based package for managing all the requirements of a competition. HCCP has to date been used in at least 17 competitions of which I am aware. Version 1.2 includes a large number of new features, mostly generated from the requests of the competition organizers. These include: - the ability to handle multiple brewers per entry - A parallel entry database, for entries which have not yet been received. These can then be marked as received and assigned entry numbers when they are in hand. - Option for new, larger, bottle labels. - Option for bottle labels with category numbers, for those who wish to label bottles after the the entries are entered into the system - Ribbon labels to attach to the back of award ribbons - Significantly enhanced generation of the XML report for submitting to the BJCP. Now validates entries and attempts to calculate point awards for Organizers, Judges, and Stewards based on the size of the competition. It can also be "saved" for future use or updating. - Many, many minor bug fixes. HCCP 1.2 uses a slightly different database format than previous versions. Any old format databases will be automatically updated to the new format if imported into HCCP.
