All,
 
I find that my judging has greatly improved since I began brewing the styles in which I am judging. So, when given the opportunity to pick what styles to judge, I only go for something I am familiar with. When I don't have that opportunity to pick, I speak up and say something - because I don't think it's fair to the Homebrewer's beer about to be judged. 
 
One last thing - I sometimes sit with other judges who tend to judge beer in comparison to what they brew. Example: While judging Bitters recently, there was a judge at the table who commented that Bitters was "his thing." He subsequently judged every homebrew bitter to his own brew. OK, so how do we know this guy/judge doesn't brew crap? His comments on the judge sheets clearly showed he only had five words in his vocabulary (one of them ctually being some sort of grunt noise). Anyway, of the three judges at the table, his scores were well below the average of the table. Maybe he was some kind of Bitters Brewing God (doubt it!).
So to make a long story short (too late, I know) my message to those judges that practice this type of my homebrew vs. their homebrew is to lighten up. Judge the beer in front of you, not with an imaginary bottle of your homebrew sitting next to it.
