Judges & Entries Needed, 12th Annual BUZZ Off May 21st (Christopher Clair) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Tom Schmidlin Date: Sat, 16 Apr 2005 23:04:50 -0700 Subject: RE: Shipping Beer I go the 'live yeast samples for analysis' route myself. However, it is completely illegal to ship alcohol via the USPS, and you can get in trouble. On the other hand, it is NOT illegal to ship via UPS, although it IS illegal to ship alcohol between certain states, depending on the receiving state's regulations which change all of the time. UPS and Fedex know the rules regarding which states alcohol may be shipped between. I think it is legal to ship _within_ most states, but from one state to another is different. You may, however, run into the occasional UPS person who doesn't know the rules and may not allow you to ship your beer - so a little deception to avoid problems. As for bringing beers to a central location, that is also governed by state laws. In Washington, it is legal to transport homebrew within the state as long as the quantity removed from the home does not exceed one gallon. It may also be stored at a central location for judging for up to 7 days or so, I can't remember the actual number. You're right, the yeast samples route will not hold up in court if you ship via USPS. Via UPS, Fedex, and maybe DHL should be no problem however, it is dependant upon their policies. Seems to me since they became the Brewers Association that the homebrewer has fallen off their radar. They have gotten very active with legislation - for professional breweries.
