It is not as if the beer is being shipped to kids or used for any illegal or harmful purposes." and he's absolutely right. However, the fact remains that the act of shipping itself may indeed be illegal, and all it takes is one rotten SOB to make a stink. We used to have a wonderful event where the same recipe was brewed by different pros, and people made the effort to drive around the state and deliver the grain and hops (and possibly even yeast, tho I'm not so sure about that) so that the beer would be as close as possible, difference being water, equipment and technique. The brewers would bring the beer to a "central" location, and the public would get to judge which they liked best. Fun event, good time, but (since the beer didn't travel to a distributer) technically illegal. Some sodder took umbridge for reasons unknown (and at this point irrelevent) and notified the state licquor board. They made certain it was known by all and sundry that any further such "bending" of the rules would not be tolerated - risking fines, loss of liscence etc, etc. Naturally, it stopped. As did at least one comp sponsored by brewers that are now worried about keeping all orafices clean, as they have inspectors crawling around. All it takes is one dorkon to bitch, and you're hosed. Personally, I LIKE the 'yeast samples' route, but would not want to bet the farm that it would stand up in court. Especially if your judge is feeling at all vindictive, or just having a bad day. My $.02, for what it's worth. Coming to Alaska AND judging beer! The E.T. Barnette Homebrew Competition will take place in Fox, Alaska (a small mining community ~11 miles north of Fairbanks) on July 16, 2005. The overall quality of the entries in the competition is exceptional. The somewhat higher shipping costs and a $500 prize for Best of Show tend to bring out only the best beers. We would love to have folks come up to visit and help with the judging. Information about this competition may be found at the following URL: http://www.mosquitonet.com/~stihlerunits/ScottsDen/Beer/Events/Events.html ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Fellow Judges Beware! I fell for the call for judges from that smooth talking Scott! Seeing that Fox, Alaska was only a few inches away on the map, I drove my pickup there to judge in 2002. Unlike the competition’s namesake, I must admit Scott was more than honest in his description of the contest and Alaska. So much so that I hopped on one of my motorsickels and went back to judge in 2003. Yes fellow judges, participation in the E.T. Barnett competition can become Addictive! With great suffering and despair, I was able to successfully fight my demons in 2004. With the addition of a new judging opportunity in Seward this summer, I might not be so successful in 2005.
