A CEP Suggestion ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Jon Tobey Date: Sat, 26 Mar 2005 11:16:03 -0800 (PST) Subject: A CEP Suggestion I'm glad the BJCP finally got involved with a continuing education program. I would also suggest that in order to maintain our credentials that it become a requirement that every judge must enter at least one contest/year. This would do two things: 1) Ensure that judges brew, which I feel is critical for helping people troubleshoot their beers. (Of course this makes the assumption that helping people make better beers is part of our goal. That is, a competition could just be about who makes the best beer, and then feedback should only pertain to how a particular beer stacks up to the guidelines, not how to improve the beer. This is another topic entirely.) 2) Ensure that judges have empathy for our customers. Getting score sheets back can best be described as "enlightening," and I'm not necessarily talking about in terms of how to make better beer. Many similar organizations do this. For instance when I taught skiing I had to take regular clinics to maintain my credentials. Of course, these clinics also gave me credits to furthering my credentials.
