I think you helped shed some light that the BJCP was being run as for profit business by "one" under the guise of a NFP educational organization. Since the new BJCP is starting with a zero balance until the investigation is settled (whcih we all know could take years), its obviously that the current fees for taking the test, competitions, etc. are appropriate. Now would be a good time to start formulating a new plan that would look at the past as being over funded and looking how to bring that back into a more reasonable fee structure but also leave room for generating educational based programs. You listed some great ideas in your post. I think its also important to have face to face Board meetings and would be in favor of having the Board budget money for travel expenses so that they can have one or two face to face metings each year. Obviously these should be frugal events. I think the face to face meetings would give the Board more opportunity to review and resolve issues and promote new ideas. I just can't imagine how a Board that spans the country can function well without this type of meeting. If the BJCP has already been having these type of meetings, I appologize for the suggestion for something that is already taking place. -Dan Schultz pnwbrewer`at`msn.com ********************************************************************** * JudgeNet - the beer judge digest * * Send plain text only, no HTML, MIME, encoded text or attachments * * Manage your subscription online: http://synchro.com/judge * * Send subscription requests & changes to judge-request`at`synchro.com * ********************************************************************** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Ted Hausotter Date: Fri, 11 Feb 2005 11:38:27 -0800 Subject: RE: Digest for the period 2/10/2005 - 2/11/2005 Francisco asks about beer vocabulary. He is right, there are all types of scattered references of beer vocabulary. Part of the goal will be to put it all in one spot and make it complete. Remember BJCP judges are the few that give feedback, not just a score like the commercial competitions. Consider you receive a score sheet on a beer you entered in a competition. It talks about balance of malt and hop bitterness. What is balance? It would be nice for a novice brewer to go to the BJCP web site and look up the confusing words for explanation. Most will not have a Meilgaard Flavor Wheel. Not the most exciting job, but one that the CEP team will work on to make it easier for new judges and novice brewers to understand the sometimes confusing vocabulary of beer judging. Dear All, I have been reading the continuing saga regarding the (allegedly)embezzled finances of the BJCP with great interest and cannot fathom how the previous boards allowed the President to also be the Treasurer and be intimated by him. What equally disturbing to me is the posting that the BJCP was never incorporated as a 501-c3 not for profit. This means the organization misrepresented themselves each time something was purchased tax free on the group's behalf. Being a Chairman of a historical group, the first thing one does is to file for the exemption, and register as a charity (where applicable). This is a damming indictment against previous boards and elected officers who should have at least asked to be shown the tax exemption letter from the IRS, or ask for the tax ID number. Is the BJCP registered as a 501-c3 now? Asleep at the wheel is not a proper excuse for what occurred. Perhaps more checks and balances need to be inserted into the by-laws(for example; make public the BJCP IRS- 990 tax returns each year). An oversight committee of BJCP members might need to be organized to at least read minutes of each board meeting for conflict of interests or other irregularities. As for those who allegedly embezzled; If indicted, convict them. Or, give the money back.
