Crimes against Beermanity (Antony Hayes) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Bill Pierce Date: Tue, 8 Feb 2005 09:40:32 -0500 Subject: RE: BJCP president's letter The recent revelations about financial improprieties and the alleged embezzlement of funds by the former BJCP president have been handled very poorly in my opinion. I understand the need for caution and the inability to reveal some facts when a criminal investigation is ongoing, as well as the desire not to cause alarm and avoid innuendo among the membership of the organization and the larger homebrewing community. However, to think that oblique references to these events buried in the BJCP president's report and news on the website would go unnoticed or not be the source of embarrassment and controversy is both naive and disingenuous. The board of directors deserves to be criticized for their poor handling of this issue. The BJCP membership should have been notified of this situation directly and individually in as frank a manner as possible under the circumstances. Of course the need for restraint and constructive measures should be stressed, but it does no service to the board, the membership and homebrewing in general to try to disguise or conceal the seriousness of the situation. I hope future communications will be more forthright and open. -- Bill Pierce BJCP Certified judge Cellar Door Homebrewery Burlington, Ontario ********************************************************************** * JudgeNet - the beer judge digest * * Send plain text only, no HTML, MIME, encoded text or attachments * * Manage your subscription online: http://synchro.com/judge * * Send subscription requests & changes to judge-request`at`synchro.com * ********************************************************************** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: zuvaruvi`at`cox.net Date: Tue, 8 Feb 2005 10:49:23 -0500 Subject: Ship your beer Entries are due now through February 23rd to AleSmith Brewing Company for America's Finest City Homebrew Competition: http://www.quaff.org/AFC2005/AFCHBC.html We still need judges for March 4-5th. Thank God for the wake up call! Obviously when something of this magnitude happens, it is reflective of all of our present and past officers in the BJCP. If there are any discrepancies or misuse of funds, usually the officers (President, Vice President, Secretary & Treasurer) heads are on the chopping block because they all know what is going on (or should) behind the scenes. They should be held accountable! Whatever expenditures took place in the BJCP, rest assured (unless someone took a impromptu cruise around the world, including drinks!) that the officers in charge at the time, knew of this! You don't suddenly find your club funds have disappeared without a trace! Though current and past BJCP officers have been advised not to discuss anything pertaining to the ongoing criminal investigation, they all wear the mask of embarrassment relating to this "Watergate" issue. Fortunately, at this time, we have a new Treasurer who is undoubtedly looking over his shoulder and has a conscience! New officers in the BJCP are anxious to gain members confidence back and are accepting part blame for past activities (a hell of a way to start a new job!) as part of their new responsibilities. This is our organization! Lets all pitch in and make it "Our BJCP" again! Cheers, Pete Algerio (VP Brewers East End Revival) ********************************************************************** * JudgeNet - the beer judge digest * * Send plain text only, no HTML, MIME, encoded text or attachments * * Manage your subscription online: http://synchro.com/judge * * Send subscription requests & changes to judge-request`at`synchro.com * ********************************************************************** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Antony Hayes Date: Tue, 8 Feb 2005 21:25:08 +0200 Subject: Crimes against Beermanity We need some perspective regarding the misplacement of the trifling sum of $65K. A far greater BJCP crime is the attempt to pass off Becks; Heineken; Stella Artois and Singha as Premium American Lagers. Even Miller Genuine Draft is now a South African Beer - ask Norman Adami. I have it on good authority that there is no such thing as a genuine Premium American Lager! Who will second my proposal to rename Style 1C Premium International Lager? Seriously, I think that the BJCP disclosure regarding this embarrassing financial situation is exemplary. I had a rethink over my own club's finances and we are equally exposed to such an occurrence. BJCP is not a corporate, but a group of passionate individuals. The positive impact that they have had on international beer appreciation earns them a bit of space to sort this problem out, in my books.
