This latest development is just one thing that has transpired with the BJCP in recent years. There has also been strides in our organization! Yeah, it urks many of us when something of this nature comes to a head! The appropriate statement should be; What can we do about it? If we are to organize and do something, where do we start? I, along with many other members have just sat back and watched while there have been some changes in the BJCP that haven't thrilled many of us. We are, at times, forced to go along for the ride so it seems! Many of us are guilty of not being involved enough to do something about it! I am among those members. Without sounding too pessimistic, there have been good decisions made in the BJCP also. With any organization, large or small, there is always something to complain about. Yes, there is a criminal investigation going on. We all know about that! We must wait on the outcome for the time being. What else can we do? I really don't want to get into a debate about it but I saw your post and had to reply. Maybe venting is the first step? I am interested in your comments as I am sure others are. This is our organization! What can we do? Venting is good, but actions gain results! Do you have any ideas to post for members so we can all headbang and see what are the real concerns? In the end, I think the phrase is; innocent until proven guilty! Lets be part of something positive instead of playing armchair quarterback (Superbowl Sunday) and get more involved with our governing body. I understand the need for "legal" restraint regarding the details of the situation but I think a few more details on why it took three years to realize financial reports weren't made to the membership are needed. How many of today's Board members were Board members over those last three years? It does sound like the current Board is taking the necessary steps to minimize these problems in the future by their new management of the treasury. I am also curious as to why an organization such as the BJCP needed to amass $65,000 as a NFP organization. I recognize that there is some level of funds required to ensure solvency but I see about five to ten times that amount. Even if half of that amount will eventually be accounted for as expenses, there's still too much money headed to the BJCP treasury. There are any number of activities that the BJCP could fund that would give back to the home brewing community that funds the very existence of the BJCP. -Dan Schultz 2004 President Oregon Brew Crew BJCP Certified pnwbrewer at msn dot com ********************************************************************** * JudgeNet - the beer judge digest * * Send plain text only, no HTML, MIME, encoded text or attachments * * Manage your subscription online: http://synchro.com/judge * * Send subscription requests & changes to judge-request`at`synchro.com * ********************************************************************** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: John C.Tull Date: Sun, 6 Feb 2005 11:10:07 -0800 Subject: Re: President's letter In the letter, it states: > On the down side, there is a criminal investigation underway > concerning BJCP funds. Much energy and time has been > expended on this matter over the past seven months. I would imagine that all the information that needs to come out will in due time. Until then, we should probably hope that law enforcement officials can get to the bottom of things rapidly, and that the BJCP can regain any funds that may have been lost. Another important bit of information in the letter relates to a failure to establish tax exempt status. Let us hope that there will not be any penalties from this oversight. BTW, I have noticed many criminal investigations going on in Washington, D.C. related to the _other_ president, and as far as I can tell, people do not care. Having been involved in a few other non-profit organizations, I am quite surprised that the BJCP left that kind of money sitting in our coffers. An organization like the BJCP should be distributing that money in the form of grants and scholarships, as well as to causes that promote the quaffing and appreciation of "Real Beer and Ale". Some ideas that come to mind would be to develop relationships with leading culinary schools to help promote beer and cuisine as part of the study. I do not know how many times I have sat in a trendy café or restaurant with a great wine list and a very disappointing beer selection. In many cases, the cuisine would have paired with many readily available beers better than the suggested wine pairing. Just think, the embezzler could have assets seized by the IRS if he didn't report his income from his theft to the IRS, along with a criminal sentence after the investigation is complete. Dang, I wouldn't want to be in his shoes! Glad there are new accounting internal controls in place, but once our funds are significant again, may I suggest an annual audit from an independent accounting firm as well? An independent audit checks all the internal controls to see if they are working correctly, and makes a report of financial position and stability. -----Original Message----- From: judge`at`synchro.com [mailto:judge@synchro.com]On Behalf Of Rich Ireland Sent: Monday, February 07, 2005 6:36 AM To: JudgeNet - the beer judge digest Subject: FW: Embezzlement Rich Ireland Regional Sales Manager Saab-Rosemount Tank Gauging Inc.
