At a very prestigious competition, I was given feedback regarding my choice to use these bottles. The judge said "Twist off caps .. no no". I first thought that it was perhaps because the threading didn't seal as well as the others and oxygen could get in. However, that really doesn't make sense to me. If that was the case, all twist off beers would be flat, wouldn't they? Does anyone know if this is a common feeling among judges, and if so, why? A common problem with the commercial examples listed is that they are not native to the country in which the judge is tasting them. Beer is not indestructible; in fact, it changes dramatically with age, and usually not for the better. Weizenbier is a style that particularly benefits from freshness. It is important to keep this in mind whenever looking to imports as hallmarks of a style. It is often best to seek out local examples that do meet the guideline descriptions and use that as your benchmark. Of course, travel works even better. Have fun! George de Piro Brewmaster, C.H.
