BJCP website returns (Ed Westemeier) 2. Spirit of Free Beer - Call for Judges (Anderson Robert W (Andy) NSSC) 3. contacting Pat Babcock? (Bob Paolino) 4. competition logistics (Bryan L. Gros) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Ed Westemeier Date: Sun, 16 May 2004 13:35:21 -0400 Subject: BJCP website returns Although the HBD servers are still out of commission (as of this writing), the BJCP website (www.bjcp.org) is back in operation. Thanks to the generosity of Jamil Zainasheff and morebeer.com, and the efforts of the BJCP's tireless IT Director, Gordon Strong, we were able to duplicate pretty much everything from the previous website. Tomorrow may bring new woes, but today we have beer in our glass. This regional competition is registered with the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). We need BJCP-accredited beer judges to judge this event and to award ribbons and prizes for style categories and for Best of Show. Although BJCP-accredited judges will have priority, novice judges who are interested in the BJCP will be teamed with experienced judges, as space allows. Stewards are also needed. We need your help. We expect an even larger field of entries this year than last, due to Spirit of Free Beer's growing reputation for being well organized, having great judges, and awarding fantastic prizes. Judging will take place at Old Dominion Brewing Company in Ashburn, Virginia. Stewards and judges are asked to arrive by 8:30 AM on Saturday. Coffee and bagels will be served before the morning session. A cookout lunch will be provided to all judges and stewards on Saturday. Free lodging for out of town judges will be made available from members of BURP. If you are interested in lodging, please contact the Judge Coordinator. (judges at burp dot org) Judges are encouraged to register on-line (see below), via email, or by contacting the Judge Coordinator directly. Judges, please register no later than Saturday, 4 June 2004. If you have judging preferences or plan to enter beers for the competition, please notify the judge coordinator when you register. Does anyone have a non-hbd email address for Pat Babcock? Our club website is/was on hbd but we've made other arrangements. I received an inquiry from another member asking if we could get in touch with Pat and it sounds like we have someone in our club who might be able to offer alternate DNS hosting for hbd until Pat's new ISP gets its act together. Hmmm, I didn't ask, but I don't see why if we can do that that it might not be possible to offer the same for the bjcp site(??) I'm not the one who can answer the questions but if Pat's out there (and, yes, I'm also going to try to look for a telephone number ;-) ) maybe we can get our resources together and work out a temporary fix. Gros Date: Mon, 17 May 2004 20:41:45 -0700 Subject: competition logistics Are there general guidelines on how to combine styles into categories for the purposes of a competition? This question arises partly from the discussion on the new styles regarding listing strong styles with their related but smller bretheren (e.g. Scotch ales in the Scottish category or barleywine). Let's assume the organizer wants to allow entries in all of the 20+ BJCP defined styles. From experience, the organizer knows that around 25% of the entries will be IPA, APA or American Amber ales. If he/she is expecting about 50 entries, how many groups should they plan on (assuming awards to the top three in each group)? 100 entries? Should the organizer announce the groupings ahead to time to the entrants, or wait to see how the entries come in? Finally, what is the best way to group styles? color? malt/hop balance? alcoholic strength? countries of origin? How do you experts out there handle these issues?
