Re:Election notification (David Houseman) 2. Re: Backlog cleared (David Houseman) 3. Re: Beer Styles (Jeff Renner) 4. Re: election notification (Ed Westemeier) 5. Reminder: Boneyard Brew-Off, June 5 2004 (Joel Plutchak) 6. Judges & Entries Needed, 11th Annual BUZZ Off May 22nd (Christopher Clair) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: David Houseman Date: Tue, 4 May 2004 07:37:10 -0400 Subject: Re:Election notification Jeff, just look at it until you need glasses ;-)) Dave ********************************************************************** * JudgeNet - the beer judge digest * * Send plain text only, no HTML, MIME, encoded text or attachments * * Send subscription requests & changes to judge-request`at`synchro.com * ********************************************************************** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: David Houseman Date: Tue, 4 May 2004 07:50:35 -0400 Subject: Re: Backlog cleared In addition to recording the organizer points for the competition organizer reports that have been submitted, I'm also attempting to get the delinquent organizer reports submitted. The organizers that I've been able to contact have been responsive and expect that a number of these will be recorded shortly. But a number of the email addresses are no longer valid and I cannot locate the organizers. So I ask all judges to contact the organizers of competitions you've judged that haven't been filed with the BJCP and work with them to file these reports. Or get together with other judges of these competitions and re-create the organizer report. There cannot be credit for judging at these competitions unless the organizer report is submitted (hopefully using the on-line system). Thanks, David Houseman ********************************************************************** * JudgeNet - the beer judge digest * * Send plain text only, no HTML, MIME, encoded text or attachments * * Send subscription requests & changes to judge-request`at`synchro.com * ********************************************************************** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Jeff Renner Date: Tue, 4 May 2004 10:25:40 -0400 Subject: Re: Beer Styles Ant Hayes of South Africa writes: >I am preparing for the BJCP exam, and have encountered some >difficulty in assigning the following beers to categories I look forward to this discussion. Some beers don't fall into styles. Style categories are, after all, an artificial construct. Beers, especially traditional beers, developed into what we have tried to organize into rough groups of similar ones, but many just don't fit. >1. Leffe Bruin; St Benoit Bruin Belgians are a weak area for me - I'll pass in favor of others. I could look it up, which is how I would have to do it if I were judging. >8. Sheppard Neame's Bishops Finger Bishop's Finger fits well into the 4C category, 4C. Strong Bitter/English Pale Ale http://bjcp.org/styleguide04.html, and is used as a commercial example. I have never had a good bottle of it myself. They've all reeked of diacetyl, leading me to wonder where his Excellency's finger has been. >2. Youngs Waggledance By the numbers, at least, Waggle dance, which I've not had, sounds like it would fit into 4C as well. >3. Hopback Summer Lightning Summer Lightening probably would shoe horn into 4C though its pale color would cause some problems. It might be not much lighter than 6 deg L, though. The real Ale Almanac says 14 EBC, which would be ~7L. I think it seems lighter. This is a hot new style in UK - very pale, rather strong (5%) hoppy bitters. Typically brewed with all pale malt. Many of them have similar names - Golden or Summer this or that. Part of their appeal, I think, is that young people can drink them and look up-to-date like lager drinkers, not like your old Uncle Bert with his so boring bitter. >4. Badger Golden Glory I had to google this as I'm not familiar with it. According to the brewer http://www.badgerbrewery.com/beers/glory.htm it has "the subtle addition of extract of peach blossom to enhance the floral blend of aromatic and bitter hops." That would put it in 24 Specialty/Experimental/Historical if it is a variation of a classic style - perhaps in this case 4B. Special or Best Bitter judging by its 4.5% alcohol. If it has a strong peach blossom aroma, perhaps 21 Fruit Beer, but this doesn't seem likely, though the brewer's web site says it has "distinct flavours and peachy/melon aroma." >5. XXXX / Fosters Foster's is given as a commercial example for 1A. Light/Standard/Premium as a standard lager, but given its bitterness level (high for American standard lager), I think it fits better as a premium American lager. But it's not a good fit. I think it would stand out as different from American lagers, although it's been years since I've had it. >6. Tusker / Castle lager >7. Tennant Lager While I'm not familiar with these, they would probably have to be entered and judged as European lagers, perhaps 2B. Northern German Pilsner. Before Classic American Pilsner was a recognized style, I entered my first one in this category and took a first. >9. Kilkenny The new proposed 9D Irish Red Ale. >Secondly, how would a Bud typically score on the BJCP system? I've already made a suggestion to Ant off line a while back. I look forward to hearing what others think and their rationale. Jeff -- Jeff Renner in Ann Arbor, Michigan USA, JeffRenner`at`comcast.net "One never knows, do one?" What are the possible consequences? Will I go blind? Blind? No, of course not. However, those who quote only parts of sentences for the purpose of making lame jokes are subject to other penalties. By order of the BJCP Disciplinary Committee, one point will be deducted from the Overall Evaluation section of the scoresheet of any beer you enter in a sanctioned competition for the next six months. Of course, you can avoid this penalty by simply leaving your overalls at home when you take your beer to the competition, but we feel this stern warning will serve to chasten you sufficiently. Actually, the purpose of the stern warning was just to preclude anyone from another region from trying to vote and getting an error message. Incidentally, today (Tuesday) is the last day of voting, so we'll tally the votes and report the results on the website tomorrow.
