TIME FACTOR (Tim Oborn) 2. Score Sheet Laziness (Steve Fletty) 3. Score Sheet Quality (Ted Hausotter) 4. Call for Judges - AHA Southern Regional (Bev Blackwood II) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Tim Oborn Date: Wed, 07 Apr 2004 00:32:05 -0600 Subject: TIME FACTOR To all proquaffers, RE: Master routes and the BJCP Exam...great ideas! I think that a slightly alternative exam format would be much easier for all concerned. I wouldn't worry about getting your suggestions ripped to shreds, though. No one around here would dream of doing that! Inconceivable! ;) By the way, are those ideas endorsed by the BJCP?!? Just kidding!! Goofing aside, I've got to mention the following again, because it seems to have been forgotten. The biggest problem IMHO with the BJCP exam is THE TIME ALLOTTED! It shouldn't be a timed exam. In fact, no exam should be a timed exam. How would it hurt to allow someone ALL the time they need to express their ideas in a coherent and organized fashion, provided that they limit their essay responses to a set size (say 2 pages)? Timed exams are not considered "best practices" pedagogically; the only reason they are still around in academic settings is because exams HAVE to end within scheduled class time! Since we do not have these constraints, I vote we get rid of the time limit entirely. I end with the immortal words of Groucho Marx: "Time flies like an arrow, but fruit flies like a banana!" Have a great Easter, everyone! A brewer friend recently got a score sheet from a Midwest National BCJP judge with about 3-6 words per section. Last year, my score sheets from 1st round Nationals were similarily filled out. Or not filled out. If you're really a nationally ranked judge, then you should, I think, be able to do a better job. ********************************************************************** * JudgeNet - the beer judge digest * * Send plain text only, no HTML, MIME, encoded text or attachments * * Send subscription requests & changes to judge-request`at`synchro.com * ********************************************************************** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Ted Hausotter Date: Wed, 07 Apr 2004 09:39:45 -0700 Subject: Score Sheet Quality I agree with Bill about scoresheet quality. As a contest entrant, I want to know more than 1 liners also. When I have judged with BJCP judges who use 1 word to describe a beer, as head judge, I have reminded them that the entrant is paying money for our evaluation of their beer and we owe them a little bit more response.
