Subject: Digest for the period 12/15/2003 - 12/16/2003 Table of contents ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. WZZ HBC 2004 (John C.Tull) 2. Numerology and Beer Judging (Alan Hord) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: John C.Tull Date: Wed, 10 Dec 2003 11:14:03 -0800 Subject: WZZ HBC 2004 I want to invite the members of this list to participate in the 2004 Washoe Zephyr Zymurgists Hombrew Competition here in Reno, NV. We will be judging Sunday 29 February 2004, with entries due from 7-21 February 2004. Last year we had over 100 entries, and the BOS winner brewed their beer at the Great Basin Brewing Company. I am working on similar arrangements for our BOS winner this year as well. If you would like to enter your homebrew, or volunteer to steward or judge, please visit our competition web page for all the details, and for online registration. Email me if you have any questions. http://134.197.55.114/wzz/wzz-comp2004.html Cheers, John C. First let me state that this topic in not about Religion, though I am religious in the application of this topic such that might be better proposed alternately as "the study of numbering beer entries" ~ hence Numerology. I have seen as well as have been told of different schemas for numbering entries. Prosaically speaking there are few methods of numbering but I am still interested in consuming this topic as it affects a larger body of work relating to management of competitions overall. Therefore I tender a survey so that Ye will have opportunity to commend or flog the examples provided. Please keep in mind that I am looking for Pros and Cons as well as the Cheat Factor; what are the benefits and pitfalls of this type of numbering particularly with sorting and pulling as well as the ability to determine who the brewer is. Case 1. Straight chronological numbering: begins with 1 and ends with the final count. Pros: Numbering assigned as entries are received. Cons: Fairly easy to figure out who entered first and last, as well as groupings by a single brewer, plus most difficult to sort by substyle. Case 2. Randomly numbered after all the entries are received. Pros: Better masking of identity. Cons: Need to wait for all entries before numbering plus most difficult to sort by substyle. Case 3. Application of a unique numbering system. Digressions as follows: A) Unique Brewer ID + Substyle. Pros: Easiest to sort and pull; easy for judges to know the substyle. Cons: Brewer ID would need to be randomly assigned for each HBC, plus it might be possible to determine which brewer by groupings of entries. B) Random 4 digit number. Option to begin with an even base to determine the final count. Pros: There seems to be a preference for 4 digits over 3 to aid in obscuring the brewer. Cons: Assumes all issues with sorting by substyle. C) Variation of B) with the number beginning with the assigned Flight Number and sequential after that. I've noted that State Fairs prefer this method for some odd reason. Pros: Nearly easiest to sort and pull. Cons: Need to wait until all entries arrive before numbering. Have I missed anything? The onus of numbering shifts the headache from one to anther depending on the role a person plays in the competition. The Organizer and the Cellar Master want to pull and sort as few times as possible. The Judges and Stewards want to be able to identify the entry as quickly as possible. The Contestants require the highest anonymity for proper feedback and the best care for their entry. I want what makes the most sense so I can live without fear of someone telling me my administration and management is flawed and desire to deny me good beer.
