That is what we began doing a few years ago, We print about 4 copies of it that way, and 5 or so the regular two column format. Then depending upon the categories at a table we pass out only the styles for that table to judge. The "weird beers" (no offense intended) require the complete guidelines as does the BOS table. Other than that just the guidelines relevant to that table are provided. The 4 copies of the extended category printing insure that if a category is split there are plenty of copies for the judges in the split category. I too would like to buy a few of them and I would like to find a printed copy of the flavor wheel. I've did a few searches on the internet without any success. Anyone have a source? Also, I like Peter Torgrimson idea about a standard instruction sheet for stewards. A good steward can make a judging flight go very smooth (and help keep the competition on schedule). I'm looking forward to reading the instructions. Thanks, Ed Tash Then let's drink a bunch of beer and set off fireworks. - Dave Barry, "Dave Barry Turns 40" ********************************************************************** * JudgeNet - the beer judge digest * * Send plain text only, no HTML, MIME, encoded text or attachments * * Send subscription requests & changes to judge-request`at`synchro.com * ********************************************************************** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: The Lichtenberg's Date: Tue, 25 Nov 2003 09:40:44 -0500 Subject: Coffee Beans When judging the first round of AHA Nationals a few years ago, I was seated next to a woman that works at the Monel Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia. At Yankee Candle's main store they have little jars of coffee beans that you can sniff in between the candles to revive your sense of smell. Has anyone every used something similar when judging? And yeah, I've experienced that in several 'aromatic' places, perfume and scented oil shops, specifically. The theory is that not only is the coffee a 'different' aroma but a sharp enough one to 'reset' the sensors in out noses. Personal experience suggests that one rapidly heads toward 'overload' however, and loses much ability to small anything fairly quickly - like maybe 1/2 hour. Now, in a competition where the 'basic' aromas are not nearly so heavy as in a candle or perfume shop, it might last longer, and be an effective revival. The problem remains, what to sniff? Agreed, we can't use coffee, and it seems to me that most strong aromas show up on beer to one degree or another. Gasoline might work, but out noses might not after that! Alcohol, cheese, cinnamon, orange, any floral - all these are scents we may already need to be watching for... Patchuli, maybe? Great idea, but I've personally had no success persuing it. I'd love to hear from others.
