On that list, he mentioned the Homebrew Color Guide by Dennis Davison that several of you had described in your various posts. While I have my own that I bought at one of our local homebrew shops 6 or 7 years ago (it says "copyright 1994" on the envelope), I have heard that they are "out of print" and no longer available. Can anyone confirm, or, if not true, provide a phone number, address, or website where can they be purchased? I would love to recommend that our club purchase some to use at meetings, or to buy in advance for our next competition to give as "perks" to our out-of-town judges. I have a few very minor suggestions: 1. I like the idea of having the Judge Instructions at the table. They don't get used that much, but should be handy. A package including the Judge Instructions and the relevant style guide sections would be a nice item to have at the table. 2. Bottle caps and capper are not necessary, and probably would be in the way. Usually, the cap is just eased off, and then recapped on the bottle by thumb pressure. This usually is enough to keep the beer if there is a desire to revisit it later in the flight. I typically do this with all entries, and then place them in order at the side of the table. This way, there is no confusion about which bottle goes with which cap (and the entry number). 3. I assume the grease pencil is for writing the entry number on the tasting glasses. This might cause a problem with cleaning the glasses later. If plastic glasses are used, a permanent marker can be used if it is odorless, or a grease pencil could work if no residue gets on the judges' hands. If glass is used, a paper table covering is nice (or a couple of pages of paper) so that each tasting glass may placed next to its entry numbers written on the paper. 4. Mechanical pencils are nice, but expensive. Many judges bring their own pencils, erasers, etc. Some mechanical pencils can be made available at the organizer's station in case someone forgets their own pencils. This can reduce the expense while supplying pencils to those who need them. Likewise with erasers. 5. I suggest that judges who want to use flashlights and color guides bring their own. 6. A calculator must be available wherever the scores are checked. If stewards do this, each steward should have a calculator. I see no need for a calculator for each table. As with many things, no detail is too small to be ignored when planning a competition. Another thing which occurs to me (and I have never put together) is an instruction sheet for stewards. This will vary with competitions as different systems are used. However, I perceive we are generally adopting a standard system of having all the flight entries in a cooler at the table, the steward checking the scoresheets and flight sheet for proper addition and complete judge information, etc. We should be able to work up a standard instruction sheet for stewards which IMHO would be a useful addition to our operation. As time allows (yeah, right) I will try to prepare a draft, since I brought this up.
