As a grader of exams I often get examinees quote some local micro or brewpub beer as an example of the style. Many times these local examples are not known to the graders. As the style guidelines are revised we do look for new examples to add, and some to cast out. I know that the style committee would welcome suggestions from judges around the country for examples for all the styles that are available in your area. Just because something is marketed as an "Alt" (or whatever style -- plug in your favorite) doesn't make it one. They may be excellent examples of the style; they may be terrible examples. Any suggestions on how to include regional examples that are in fact excellent examples of the styles? Take only examples suggested by Master judges? Take only examples that have won Gold metals at GABF? We really want examples that are excellent for their styles and not just marketing based styles. That's why we've focused on classic examples previously. New examples are being introduced to the style guidelines; so judges, speak up and provide your suggestions for the best regional examples for all the styles. For example I was chairman last time and I was not asked to participate. It seems like that would have been a common courtesy unless the board desided that none of the old committee should be on the new committee. Alan brings up a good point about styles where you can't get the beer in parts of the US. I would have tried to get some statement for each style about how the beers should be served (temps, pouring ...). There should be _some_ kind of _offical_ (posted on the web site) process to update the guidelines.
