(Dubbel) I was judging Belgians over the weekend and was astonished by the dubbel guideline: --- Appearance: Dark amber-brown in color. Clarity is usually fair to good. Head retention may be adversely affected by alcohol content in stronger versions. Vital Statistics: OG: 1.040-1.080 IBUs: 20-35 FG: 1.012-1.018 SRM: 10-20 ABV: 3.2-7.8% --- 1. I don't know if the "head retention may be adversely affected..." part fits within what we see in the traditional examples, but even if we decide that it does, the statement doesn't say anything about what the head **should** be--that characteristic big "moussy" head. Including only the negative in the style description leaves you with "anything goes" for what the head looks like if present... it could be a pale ale head, it could be a stout head, et cetera. 2. Need I say more about the stated lower end of the scale for OG and alcohol? For a dubbel?? And let's not forget that the numbered category for which dubbel is a subcategory is STRONG Belgian Ale. Can any beer at 3.2% (and the "standard" v/v%, not even w/v%, to boot!) be considered a strong ale? ;-) Now go have a beer, Bob Paolino >From the Department of Military Intelligence and Jumbo Shrimp: Sign seen on a recently poisoned lawn: TruGreen/ChemLawn ( ) ASCII ribbon campaign X against HTML e-mail: / \ Friends don't send friends HTML-bloated messages!
