Just a reminder that it is almost time for this year's (and 6th annual) Coconut Cup homebrew competition. Along with opening up the contest to all BJCP categories, we will also be again doing our special COCONUT BREW category. Judging will be on Feb. 1 & 2. If you're interested, and we're hoping you are, check for details, entry forms, bottle labels, and guidelines at: http://hbd.org/mash/coconut.html. If you're in the area-or want to be-we can always use more judges. Need help or information? Contact the Competition Organizer, Jake Miller, at jakem1`at`ix.netcom.com. While I'm a bigger proponent of competitions as the evaluation forum since this also supports the clubs and judges who provide the evaluations, there may some instances where a more in-depth evaluation would be sought by a brewer. I'd certainly rather see BJCP judges do this for free as part of the BJCP's overall mission than charging for the service. How easy would it be to be as open and frank when you know the brewer and are doing this for a service than in a blind competition? Would we be less likely to be completely unbiased? Would we be more likely to pad the evaluation with positive compliments? I'm sure that there a large number of BJCP judges who would be more than willing to help out their fellow brewers. Good suggestion, Jeremy. Dave Houseman ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Jeremy Bergsman Date: Mon, 06 Jan 2003 09:38:05 -0500 Subject: New topic Since I've been having to PgDn a lot recently, let me offer up a new topic. There was a post in today's HBD about whether there was a need for tasters who would taste a beer critically for a small sum. As always I wanted to jump in and offer to taste it for free. The few times I've done this I have never been taken up on the offer. It's easy to see why--I look like a smart`at`$$ asking for a free beer. However, being a reasonably experienced judge I know the beer I would receive will be no picnic and I really mean it as an offer of help. Perhaps the BJCP could have a page on the web site where BJCP judges could give addresses or contact info if they were willing to judge beers sent to them for troubleshooting purposes? Even if addresses weren't given it could be listed by state so that "clients" could choose nearby judges. Discuss. ********************************************************************** * JudgeNet - the beer judge digest * * Send plain text only, no HTML, MIME, encoded text or attachments * * Send subscription requests & changes to judge-request`at`synchro.com * ********************************************************************** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Peter Torgrimson Date: Tue, 07 Jan 2003 09:38:20 -0600 Subject: Re: Smart`at`$$ tasting Great idea, Jeremy. I am willing to participate. IMHO this is a great activity for a club. I envision a panel of tasters to get more ideas and discussion. Samples could be dropped off at a local homebrew shop for pickup by the panel. Samples could come from club members or others. The service definitely should be free. This service could be publicized by homebrew shops. Most club meetings include tasting of attendee's beers. The feedback is usually quite cursory and any thoughts for improvements are usually very muted. Homebrew shop owners also taste and evaluate a lot of beer. What I am envisioning for this service is more formal and thoughtful than either of these two informal tasting activities. Each sample could be submitted with comments on the perceived problem, or submitted blind -- only the beer itself. One model for operation is for the tasting to be completely blind. As with homebrew competitions, this removes any connection between the brewer and the tasters. An alternate model is for the brewer to be present for interactive feedback. This could provide more effective evaluation and both the panel and the brewer could learn something. IMHO this probably is less effective overall than blind tasting and certainly complicates the mechanics of scheduling. There are a lot of ways this could be set up in a club setting -- at club meetings or special sessions, with a permanent or semi-permanent panel or ad hoc panel, with or without formal score sheets, blind or with brewer present. A club which is very serious about this could have a panel which could meet each week to evaluate any submitted samples to provide timely feedback to the brewer. The panel doesn't have to be gurus, just informed and perceptive brewers. The feedback is not the last word, just some opinions from experienced brewers which could be helpful. The contest will be held in just one month's time, February 7-8 in Washington, DC. (See http://www.burp.org/mcab5 for more details.) Unfortunately, while I have accumulated a list of all the people who have qualified for MCAB, I do not always have a way to contact them. My list of Qualified Entrants (those people who won in a contest last year which makes them eligible for MCAB V), does not always have addresses (either snail-mail or email.) So, I am turning to you for help. All of you are members of the brewing community, so there is a good possibility you may know one or more of these missing people. If you recognize any of the names on this list, PLEASE ask them to contact me immediately (& let them know about the web-site). Also, if you know that you qualified for MCAB V, but have not received an email from me, that means I do not have an email address for you. You might want to check the web site to make certain your name is on the list, and then send me an email so that I have your address. Your help is greatly appreciated.
