They can't both get perfect scores. That is where personal preference comes in. Not just a whim, or random choice of which you prefer, but the beer you feel better illustrates the style based on your experience and tastes. So when someone says they feel that chocolate malt gives a porter a smoother dark flavor than roast barley, that is their preference and what may give a beer an edge in their panel. That is also why we have more than one judge per panel.
