Sort of an analogy to the royal "we." Certainly there are hops appropriate to one style or the other; similarly with malts. Black patent and roasted barley would not, IMHO, generally be as appropriate in an American Brown Ale as chocolate malt and dark crystal. Certainly no absolutes in this as there are probably great counter examples, but to say I (as a judge) prefer to see chocolate malt rather than roasted barley, would not be incorrect. Even though guidelines state the parameters of how a judge must judge a beer, when it comes down to two or three good examples of style, judges usually choose what they "prefer". In response to your social tact, I hate to say that you are an instigator of argument but I am afraid that is how I am viewing it at this point. This is not just from this one particular example of your reply, which is attempting to belittle, but many that I have seen in the past. Using a little more social tact, you could be receiving less defensive replies and that would make for an overall more productive conversation vs. just slinging words without thinking of how to politely ask a question to get an informative response or maybe your intent is just an outright verbal attack to stir up conversation. It seems that we are always butting heads, Bill. How about just stepping back and relaxing after you read a posting and then replying politely? It can't hurt. Can't we all just get along?
