This will be an AHA/BJCP sanctioned event. We need volunteers! We desperately need BJCP accredited beer judges. Novice judges are also welcome and will be teamed with experienced judges. We also need stewards. Judging will take place on Saturday, June 29, 2002 at 11:00 AM in the John Muir Building at the Mother Lode Fairgrounds in Sonora, California. Coffee and donuts will be available from 9:00 to 11:00 in the judging area. A complimentary lunch will be catered. We have put together a "packet" that will be provided to each judge and steward hoping to provide you with useful information whether you stay just for the judging or wish to prolong your stay and take in some of the many local activities. We are working hard to make this one of the premier competitions in the State and with the staunch support of the Mother Lode Fair and dedicated judges such as yourself, there is no doubt we can achieve this goal. Subjectively, I don't think ABAs should be Brown IPAs, although the IBU guidelines seem to support that. I think the hop character should not be resiny, but rounder. Bitter, but not astringent, lots of hop flavor, but not a spoonful of pinesol. Maybe I don't like hops enough. I would like to hear other people's thoughts. Thanks! You can't even get to the two tanks in back - they are surrounded by boxes. Most of them are heavy - meaning they contain lots of entries and not very much packing material. I've never seen so many boxes - they just keep going on and on to the back of the cooler; an ocean of homebrew. We have our work cut out for us. We may be about to have even more than the NHC record 813 entries we had in 1997. We'll know when we unpack this coming Saturday morning. Even if you can only judge one or two of the sessions Friday Evening 4/26, 7 p.m. Saturday Morning 4/27, 9 a.m. Saturday Afternoon 4/27 1 p.m. Sunday Morning 4/28, TBA (might still be avoided with enough Sat. judges) we need you. More is better, of course, but even one session is good. Many of us will be there for all of the sessions. Our goal is to avoid extraneous judging sessions (but we'll do that if that's what it takes.) You will be judging in a bright, comfortable room, and you'll be fed very, very well on Saturday. Hey, great discussion, and great comments by all, most of which I agree with. But in a spirit of levity, I must ask about "10-20 words" for "Bottle Inspection???" Then again, I have always wondered whether this line was even necessary at all. Seems to me, the only time a comment is warranted is if there is an obvious problem, in which case the judge would probably make the appropriate comment, whether there was a space or not.
