Randy, I don't know where you're judging and what the judge pool is like there, but I'm in Phila and we're drawing judges from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and sometimes New York. (Thanks, Peter Garafolo) I think we had a couple judges from Washington DC or Baltimore at our last event. The last 3 competitions I've attended, including the one I organized and sponsored, were understaffed - despite efforts to draw judges from all these areas. In one case, we had something like 15 judges to judge 130 entries. When you split this up 2 judges to each assignment, you have 7 judge pairings. To judge 20 or so categories. Some of these guys can only do morning flight, some arrive late and can only do afternoon flight, so we didn't even have all 7 pairings all day. As a result, some judges were asked to judge 4 rounds, 2 before lunch. In one competition I know of, the organizer had to judge 2 rounds, for which he got no judging points, because they were that short of judges. Judges don't get paid, they do it as a hobby. They usually get a free lunch out of it, not much else. Their presence and participation should be looked upon as a favor, not as a job or something you can demand. I know we can't afford to turn away judges in this area, and we're thankful for the people we get. I don't think reprimands or asking judges not to return is an option - at least around here. Try this a couple times, and I guarantee competitions will all but stop here.
