I can't speak to the specific make up prior to that but many of the early AHA/BJCP participants in developing the style guides became professional brewers from their homebrewing roots. But being a brewer wasn't the most important aspect of the committee's skills, IMHO. That's because the styles are what they are. No new styles were created. It was a task in describing them in a regular way to provide an objective basis on which to judge and to brew. This competition guide is specific to homebrewing competitions. The study guide is due for an update. It's been a number of years and have to agree with you. I can't say why you never heard back from the BJCP on your offer to update the malting section of the study guide. Something we'll have to look into.
