The problem is, as has been stated, there is no really suitable place in the guidelines to put these beers-- they obviously are out of style for any of the stout categories, and I don't think judges would be really impressed by them as a "Specialty" beer. As a perennial club officer and frequent competition organizer I have club members ask for opinions on where there beers would fit best in competition, and I see more than a few of these homeless stouts. > It seems superfluous to describe the style at this stage... Coincidentally, just last week I was thinking about working up a short article on American-style stouts. I may have the opportunity to corral principals from at least three suitable breweries next month to get some first-hand information about their pertinent examples. If anybody is interested in co- authoring an article let me know. On another topic altogether, I had written a response on the topic on that AHA advertising flap but it was rejected due to addressing issues. In brief, I see it as very bad that a member of the AHA BOA gets special treatment as an advertiser.
