They were gone early in the holiday season. At the time, I wasn't aware (read "didn't care") about the controversy regarding the St. Pat's ad. In my opinion, however, this is an unfortunate, and, undoubtedly an unforeseen, consequence of the AHA making an exception to their usual policy and trying to "limit potential advertisers with. . . this project. . ." The real issue here isn't whether or not St. Pat's offers this particular product to retailers, but, rather, that St. Pat's (unlike L. D. Carlson, Crosby & Baker, G. W. Kent, Hopunion, etc.) is primarily a retail operation. Yes, they wholesale product out, but so do most of the larger retail shops (we do). This doesn't make us "wholesalers," though. The problem is that any consumer that receives a copy of Zymurgy For Beginners can contact St. Pat's, receive a catalog, and order directly a full array of supplies and equipment from them. Bonafide wholesalers would refer these inquiries to the retail shops in the consumer's region. I'm not sure that this means that Bill W. harbors a "grudge with St. Patrick's (that) runs deep." It may just mean that he feels that the playing field was not level on this matter (which it wasn't, IMHO). The fact that Lynne sits on the Board of Advisors simply exacerbates the appearance of impropriety, even if this fact is immaterial. My guess is that Lynne being allowed to adverstise in this issue may have had less to do with her position on the board and more to do with the fact that she is an aggressive advertiser that does offer some desirable products, which she promotes tirelessly. I bet a lot of people in this hobby think that these products are widely available, not just from St. Pat's. That's my two cents worth, anyway. Frankly, I agree that it's time to move on to something more positive. Our friends in Boulder made an honest mistake. Hopefully they will avoid the same kind of pitfalls in the future. Let's just move on. Maybe even talk about judging beer, huh?
