I polled many of the judges this year to see what they think and nobody had a problem with it. The Hop River club in CT has their competition on Sunday and this year's event was attended well enough that they were able to do the whole thing with only a morning session. I think they pre-judged 3 or 4 categories to help this along. It might be that Saturday homebrew competitions are just a national habit..... One advantage to having a Sunday comp would be that some people have to work (sometimes unexpectedly) on Saturday and less so on Sunday, so this might make it easier for them to commit. Last minute cancellations when you have a limited judging pool are no fun for the organizers. Hope this helps... In the particular situation he speaks of, it seems the benefits and the desires of the museum are enough to justify judging on Saturday. On top of this, I would suggest that one of our primary interests is public education, and the chance to reach out to more attendees with a Saturday demo is significant. In general, I would suggest that judging on a Sunday is a bad idea. For an area with a lot of active local judges, it probably won't matter, but out of town judges would be less likely to support a Sunday competition. If one assumes out of town judges are going to spend the night after judging (a pretty good idea, if you drove!), a Sunday competition requires a day off work for most people. Sunday judging also precludes the popular after judging pub crawl. Again, for out of town judges, this may be as big a thing as the actual judging. Nothing beats the chance for a pub crawl in a new town, with native guides (esp native guides who understand real beer). Finally, judging on Saturday allows for potential overrun sessions on Sunday. Some competitions are large enough the BOS has to be on a second day. Saturday's allow for the potential of 3 sessions, with more on Sunday. Sunday starts would probably only support 2 sessions.
