I've used Wyeast 1728 in most of those Scottish entries, so I am familiar with it. I've also used it in porter, brown ale, and bitters. I disagree that it lent any smokey character to the beers I made with it. Judges have failed to mention a smokey character in these other styles. Why? I think it is because the style guidelines for Scottish ale predispose _some_ judges to look hard for smoke and find it in a beer when, if the seed had not been planted in their brain by the guidelines, they otherwise would not. Please understand, I'm not complaining that the judges don't like my Scottish ales. I've had some success with this style in competition. Greg Noonan has scored a couple of them into ribbons, including one first place at a pretty large comp. BTW, Greg never mentioned the smoke. Regarding McEwan's Export - Do you taste any smoke in this beer? I don't. I taste a pretty clean ale with firm malt and a bit of roast. It hasn't been long since I had one, either. Perhaps I'm publicly admitting that I can't taste smokiness at that low level. So be it.
