The scoring is for the beer, not meeting/not meeting local competition rules. A local competition can direct judges to deduct points should they wish but the general rule of thumb is "If the registrars pass the beer on to the judges, then the judges should judge it." And there's lots of latitude on how judges judge, what we say, and what scores we give. I make comments on bottle appearance and if insufficient information is provided to the judges, then I provide that as feedback. But I judge the beer based on what this beer was entered as or "guessed at," if insufficient information is given. If there seems to be an entry that is very far out of style, I'll ask the registrar to look at entry forms to ensure that perhaps two or more entries from one entrant weren't inadvertantly mixed up. IMHO, we owe it to entrants to do our best to judge and provide feedback. Yes, judges do have the freedom to interpret on our own. It's up to the organizer of competition to set some guidelines for that competition. David Houseman BJCP Mid Atlantic Representative Grand Master Judge -------------------------------------------------------------------------- BJCP should provide guidelines in this area so that there is a standard from which to deviate (otherwise it's like ballot counters in Florida where everyone's free to interpret them on their own, and failure properly falls on those who determined the process). --Next_Part_SYNC687329A3F8-- Received: from srvr22.engin.umich.edu (root at srvr22.engin.umich.edu [141.213.75.21]) by srvr5.engin.umich.edu (8.9.1a/8.9.1) with ESMTP id BAA07333 for ; Sat, 3 Mar 2001 01:00:53 -0500 (EST) Received: from chmls05.mediaone.net (chmls05.mediaone.net [24.147.1.143]) by srvr22.engin.umich.edu (8.9.3/8.9.1) with ESMTP id BAA10404 for ; Sat, 3 Mar 2001 01:00:51 -0500 (EST) Received: from synchro.com (cccox.ne.mediaone.net [24.147.232.105]) by chmls05.mediaone.net (8.11.1/8.11.1) with SMTP id f2360nS03810 for ; Sat, 3 Mar 2001 01:00:49 -0500 (EST) From: "JudgeNet - the beer judge digest" To: "Digest Recipients" Reply-To: "JudgeNet - the beer judge digest" Subject: Digest for the period 03/02/01 - 03/03/01 Message-ID: Date: Sat, 03 Mar 2001 01:00:02 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/digest; boundary="Next_Part_SYNC687329A3F8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Hops: 1 Status: RO --Next_Part_SYNC687329A3F8 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Table of contents ------------------------------------------------------ BJCP exam schedule (Dave Sapsis) RE: Digest for the period 02/28/01 - 03/01/01 (Houseman, David L) --Next_Part_SYNC687329A3F8 Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Return-Path: Received: from snipe.prod.itd.earthlink.net ([207.217.120.62]) by synchro.com with SMTP (Mailtraq/1.1.4.1123) id SYNC6819296A0A for judge at synchro.com; Wed, 28 Feb 2001 19:20:53 -0500 Received: from dsapsislp2 (ip244.sacramento14.ca.pub-ip.psi.net [38.28.187.244]) by snipe.prod.itd.earthlink.net (EL-8_9_3_3/8.9.3) with SMTP id QAA17244 for ; Wed, 28 Feb 2001 16:20:46 -0800 (PST) Message-ID: <001f01c0a11b$fac9ec20$f4bb1c26 at dsapsislp2> From: "Dave Sapsis" Reply-To: "JudgeNet - the beer judge digest" Errors-To: judge-owner at synchro.com Sender: judge at synchro.com To: JudgeNet - the beer judge digest Subject: BJCP exam schedule Date: Tue, 27 Feb 2001 16:18:00 -0800 X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.00.2919.6600 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.00.2919.6600 X-Hops: 3 X-POST-MessageClass: 10; Mailing List Message Good folks, Time for the periodic post alerting any potential examinees of the current BJCP exam schedule.
