As jazzbobob wrote this is a skill that can be learned with practice. Read the technique given in the BJCP study guide: http://www.mv.com/ipusers/slack/bjcp/study98.html Try to learn to do this and stick by the protocol rigidly. Avoiding the friendly chit-chat that comes naturally while drinking beer with people who have similar interests can also speed things along. ****************************** John Watson (Hi John) asked about the tripel/strong distinction. We've probably discussed this face to face but I agree that there is little difference. Reading the guidelines suggests that the biggest difference is probably a bit more maltiness in the tripel. I would say that the tripel is also like to be a bit more complex and "in-your-face" with all those fancy "Belgian flavors" whereas the strong will be a bit more reserved, enabling you to drink a bit more. For sure there is a broad range of beers that would fit in both categories. Note to BJCP style guide people: poring over the guidelines reveals some inconsistency with the color descriptions/SRM on these beers. -- Jeremy Bergsman jeremybb at stanford.edu http://www.stanford.edu/~jeremybb --Next_Part_SYNC15211CAB66-- Received: from srvr22.engin.umich.edu (root at srvr22.engin.umich.edu [141.213.75.21]) by srvr5.engin.umich.edu (8.9.1a/8.9.1) with ESMTP id BAA05470 for ; Sun, 23 Jul 2000 01:04:06 -0400 (EDT) Received: from synchro.com (cccox.ne.mediaone.net [24.147.232.109]) by srvr22.engin.umich.edu (8.9.1a/8.9.1) with SMTP id BAA08714 for ; Sun, 23 Jul 2000 01:04:04 -0400 (EDT) From: "JudgeNet - the beer judge digest" To: "Digest Recipients" Reply-To: "JudgeNet - the beer judge digest" Subject: Digest for the period 07/22/00 - 07/23/00 Message-ID: Date: Sun, 23 Jul 2000 01:02:52 -0400 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/digest; boundary="Next_Part_SYNC15211CAB66" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Hops: 1 Status: RO --Next_Part_SYNC15211CAB66 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Table of contents ------------------------------------------------------ judging technique and tripel/strong distinction (Jeremy Bergsman) --Next_Part_SYNC15211CAB66 Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Return-Path: Received: from smtp.Stanford.EDU ([171.64.14.23]) by synchro.com with SMTP (Mailtraq/1.1.4.1123) id SYNC14851CA77B for judge at synchro.com; Fri, 21 Jul 2000 13:56:26 -0400 Received: from leland.stanford.edu (B140-AMDK.Stanford.EDU [171.65.21.144]) by smtp.Stanford.EDU (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id KAA28044; Fri, 21 Jul 2000 10:56:23 -0700 (PDT) Message-ID: <39788EC8.C102DB84 at leland.stanford.edu> Date: Fri, 21 Jul 2000 10:56:24 -0700 From: Jeremy Bergsman Reply-To: "JudgeNet - the beer judge digest" Errors-To: judge-owner at synchro.com Sender: judge at synchro.com Organization: Stanford University X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.7 [en] (Win98; U) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: JudgeNet - the beer judge digest Subject: judging technique and tripel/strong distinction References: <39788BF1.3EC9B8AE at leland.stanford.edu> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Hops: 3 X-POST-MessageClass: 10; Mailing List Message Bob Sheck wrote about the difficulty of judging well in the short time available during competitions.
