I'm my club's newsletter editor and I've made it clear that I'm not going to do a monologue--if they want a newsletter, someone is going to have to write something to make the product represent more than only my voice) Yes, if you are doing the "paper"work yourself (rather than paying the copy store) it DOES take less time to fold, stuff, and label 100 than 1000. Judges without email should _automatically_ get the mailings (besides, how else are they going to be notified of this option if they don't have email?. And members whose email addressees bounce should subsequently get mailings. And that first postal mailing should have a prominent message urging people who received the print newsletter and who DO have email to email that email address to the BCJP. Asking for a current email address at competitions should also be part of the judge registration and check-in process to build up that e-mailing list. (But judges WITH email should be allowed to opt-IN. Some people just like to have the look and feel of a printed document...and no, don't even think about sending an Acrobat file as the default email version--plain text! No attachments!!) As odd as it may seem to some in the final year of the 20th century, there are people who do not see a need to own personal computers, or if they have them, not to buy modems and connect their computers to phone lines. [Incidentally, I note that Lyle is using a juno address. But just because the service itself is free doesn't mean it's accessible or desirable to everyone.] It's not surprising that the response on this list (mine included) is in favour of using e-mailings, but we aren't representative of the entire membership.
