The competition is open to all homebrewers and will judge all BJCP/AHA sanctioned styles including Meads and Ciders. The SoFB competition is judged by experienced BJCP certified judges and comments and prizes are among the best in the country. BURP is also pleased to announce that once again we are a MCAB qualifying site. This years MCAB styles are: Classic American Pilsner, Dortmunder Export, Cream Ale, Ordinary Bitter, Scotch & Scottish Ales, American Pale Ale, India Pale Ale, Kolsch/Altbier, German Amber (all styles), American Brown, English/Scottish Strong Ales, American Barleywine, Dry Stout, European Dark Lager, Traditional Bock, Robust Porter, Bavarian Weizen, Strong Belgium Ales, Witbier, Lambic/Belgian Sour Beers. We need additional BJCP-accredited beer judges to judge this event and to award ribbons and prizes for style categories and for Best of Show. Although BJCP-accredited judges will have priority, novice judges who are interested in the BJCP will be teamed with experienced judges, as space allows. SoFB VIII has been accredited by both AHA and BJCP for Judge points. Stewards are also needed. For the past 3 years, we have increased from 200 entries to 400 entries. We expect an even larger field of entries this year, due to Spirit of Free Beer's growing reputation for being well-organized, having great judges, and awarding fantastic prizes. The Best of Show winner will be invited to formulate and brew the winning beer at one of the local microbreweries/brewpubs. Judging will take place at Old Dominion Beverage Company in Ashburn, Virginia. Stewards and judges are asked to arrive by noon on Saturday and 8:00 am on Sunday. Coffee and doughnuts will be served before the Sunday morning session. A cook-out lunch will be provided to all judges and stewards on Sunday. BURP will organize a Saturday night pub crawl of local brewpubs, and all judges and stewards are invited. Free lodging for out of town judges will be made available from members of BURP. So send your entries, or plan to come judge/steward and have a great Beer experience for only the cost of a drive to Northern Virginia.
