Here in the Southeast, we have been talking with our regional rep, Chuck Skypeck, about issues similar to those raised by David. From what Chuck has told us on several occasions, there has been some discussion among members of the BJCP Board about some of these areas, but not much progress to this point on doing anything about it. However, maybe many of us can use this forum to put together a wish list of where we would like to see the BJCP headed in this new year, decade, century, etc. Like New Year's resolutions, I suppose it never hurts to make these resolutions. What the Board and the membership decide to do about it remains to be seen. Here are some things on my wish list: 1) In line with the new style guidelines (and congrats to all those involved on all of the hard work!), I, too, read Paul Gatza's comments about getting the AHA to use the new guidelines as well. Three cheers (and a toast) to that discrepancy finally getting worked out. Paul also asks about trying to cut down on paper by asking more judges to bring the style guidelines to competitions. As a competition coordinator, I can see the benefit of this request. I think it would also be a great opportunity for the BJCP to take the lead on making this idea a reality. Why not have the BJCP put together a nice set of guideline materials that are either laminated or in some form of small loose-leaf notebook? I for one would find it very professional to show up at a competition with my "judging portfolio" that would include the guidelines, place for color guides, flavor wheels, pre-printed labels, etc. With a loose leaf format, the guidelines, which we all admit are ever changing, could be updated whenever new guidelines are approved. I think many judges would be more than willing to pay extra for something like this, or make it part of an annual dues (that has been discussed here in the past). 2) Touring refresher courses for BJCP judges. I have had the benefit of doing some controlled tasting/callibrating at the Craft Brewers Conference in Atlanta and found it very educational and enlightening. I was also able to do some tasting/callibrating on some beers that had been spiked from substances supplied by Travis Hixon, one of our club members and a local brewer (at Blackstone Brewery with Dave Miller), who attended a Seibel course several years back and brought back a kit for doing such tastings. Very informative. I can honestly say that those experiences have made me a better, more informed judge. Anything that the BJCP can do to help make something like this happen on a more regular basis would be a great benefit to all judges. I find it difficult to believe that an organization that makes passing the exam such an involved process fails to have any methods in place (other than judging at least once a year) to see that judges have opportunities to increase or improve their knowledge and skills. One way that this could be done might be to have educational sessions hosted and supported by the BJCP at regional homebrewing competitions. I could see many of our area judges taking advantage of such an opportunity. With our annual Music City Brew-Off, we have tried to provide visiting judges with an opportunity to meet an invited guest and listen to some sort of special talk on the Sunday morning after the event. I think adding something like a special tasting/callibrating session before our event would help everyone involved. Well, those are two things on my list at this point. I'm hoping that some talk over a nice cask conditioned IPA at Boscos tomorrow will stimulate some more discussion that I will share here in the coming days.
