It is true that numbers will help to balance the results-- but the purpose of that is to increase the overall accuracy and quality of the judging. This person did no one any favors by throwing in as a judge at the last minute. If the volume was a concern, then break the flights out into a series that can be managed by two judges. This, however, was probably just a poorly handled symptom-- the problem is getting the word out. When I go to judge events in the Triangle area (NC), which is really the only place I have been doing any judging, the number of judges is always adequate although sometimes tight (these are big comps for a local club-- think 100 entries or more). Members from other clubs come from to judge from all over the state because they're invited and given quite a bit of time to plan for the event. Perhaps the organizing is really where the problem began.
