Russ Wigglesworth is on vacation and intentionally computer-less, but I will try my best to explain. Every competition that receives a judge list from the BJCP, whether it's a BJCP Registered Competition or an AHA Sanctioned Competition, also receives instructions to file the BJCP's organizer's report directly to the BJCP, (Russ). For those of you who don't know, for EVERY competition that is sanctioned with the AHA, we send the BJCP $20 for providing the judge list. There have been many times that Russ has asked the AHA to look in our files and forward a specific competition's organizer report to him, when he has been unsuccessful at getting one from the organizer. We are always happy to cooperate, but this is not the desired process by either organization because it duplicates the workload. So, bottom-line, the organizer is actually responsible for getting the appropriate judge points registered directly with the BJCP. The NHC is a little different in that each regional site is just a portion of the larger national competition. The ultimate responsibility of filing the judge points for the NHC is on the AHA staff, not the individual site directors. We do have to get the information from the site directors and some of them do, in fact, file the judge list themselves directly, but the responsibility is ours. And I apologize to all concerned judges for the NHC sites that are listed on the "never filed" list. I don't want to make excuses, but I feel that you all are owed an explanation. Just two years ago, there were about 40 employees at the AOB with 4 in the AHA. Currently, we have just 2 full-time employees at the AHA and 20 at the AOB. We use to have one person dedicated to the Sanctioned Competition Program and the NHC. We don't any longer. With this downsizing, we've been stretching our resources at the same time that we are trying to introduce new programs and new, more-cooperative ways of doing things. Let me also point out that it not a communication problem between the AHA and the BJCP. Russ Wigglesworth does an excellent job of keeping in contact with us and letting us know what competition's information is missing. Russ had sent me a list of 97 competitions with missing organizer reports back on 2/26/99. We have, in fact, tracked down a few reports for competitions in the last few years, but due to the current lack of manpower, we haven't been able to get to this list yet. But, there are no excuses. The work that judges perform is indispensable to the success of any competition, especially the Nationals. Our lack of reporting does not keep in stride with our goal of working better with the BJCP and showing the judges their value to us. Again, I apologize. Let me also make this promise...As soon as this year's NHC is completed, I will, personally, file this, and previous years' NHC judging lists with Russ. I will also search our files for the other competitions' organizer reports that appear on the list and, if we do have reports from these competitions, get them to Russ as well in order to bring the BJCP's records of judging points more up-to-date. I promise to have this accomplished by July 31, 1999. The representatives from each group work together much better and more often than, I believe, many people realize. We will continue to do so. I want all of you to know that I will make tracking down all these missing organizer reports my highest priority item, once the NHC and the conference are over. You can hold me to it.
