But these may have their competitions over a couple weekends, or as in the NHC, have the second round at a different time. I'd be all for full second rounds, but the practicality of competitions with the time and judging resource constraints require some trade-offs. Get 100 judges at a medium sized competitions and use 2 full days and you can do this. When you only have 30+ judges a day over two days for a 400-500 beer competition, then organizers don't have the luxury of full second round judging. In conducting the second round mini-BOS, to be totally fair, 3 beers from each flight needs to be compared together. Because one flight of judges may score high or low compared to the others, the top three beers in any flight may be the best three overall. So only taking the top scoring beers of each flight into consideration for the overall #1 position isn't fair to the entrants. The existing mini-BOS format evolved into its current form for very good reasons. If we can find a fair and practical method to improve it, I'm all for it. This is a method that we have used for the past 3 years in Nashville as part of our Music City Brew-Off: We do some preliminary judging of flights that have more than 12 entries in them so that on the day of the event, all flights have 12 beers or less. This keeps our out-of-town judges happy, allows us to plan and run an event that stays fairly close to our anticipated schedule, and gives those attending the event some time to enjoy coming to our competition and to Nashville. Preliminary judging consists of two processes. First, a pair of BJCP registered judges taste a small sample of all of the beers that have been entered into these over-large categories. As each beer is sampled, the judges give the beers an initial "score" of (1) pass it along for judges to judge on the day of the event, (2) maybe pass it along, or (3) this one is not worthy of passing along...we'll judge it and fill out a complete score sheet this evening. We also generally write down some initial comments about the beer in case there are some fleeting characteristics that may be hard to capture later on when the once-opened beer gets judged that evening. The second phase consists of being sure that the number of beers that gets passed along is reasonable (we shoot for 8 to 12), and that sometimes means re-tasting some of the "iffy" ones to see if some of them are worthy of getting passed on to the judges the day of the event. Once that is done, all those that don't get passed along to the day of the event get judged that evening, preferably by that same set of judges. This is also a good d portunity to do some training with novice or apprentice judges, since the time constraints normally present during the day of an event aren't there. Obviously, there are several pre-requisites for this process: 1) You need enough qualified and committed judges locally to do this. 2) You need to allow yourself enough time the week or so before the competition to this, meaning that all entries must be sent in at least a week before an event. 3) Three bottles are required. But this is true with some of the procedures discussed previously in the most recent JudgeDigest. Again, it works well for us, and we will continue to fine tune the process. However, I can envision that once a competition gets above 250 entries or so (we had 180 last year) that this could become an unweildy process and difficult for a small club like ours to pull off. The number of bottles alone could become a nightmare! Another thing we will try to do this year is allow our out-of-town brewer/judges to bring entries the day of or the night before (we have a social event the night before). This will require pre-registering as well as making assumptions about the quality of beers that these brewer/judges are entering!
