Maybe add an "open" category to an existing competition? > Spencer, We have in fact done this in the last 3 or 4 local competitions in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area of NC. This has been a separate ribbon category from the usual flights and is called "Just Plain Good Beer". The ranking is by a show of hands from everyone who helps judge them. On the plus side, it's a great activity to run during BOS, which is pretty boring if you're not a BOS judge. We generally have very good and sometimes very "interesting" entries. On the other hand, the number of entries is rarely more than 5 or 6. It's a lot of fun, but don't expect broad support from the more serious brewers/entrants. -Bruce Pitner TRUB and CARBOY member --Next_Part_SYNC6496C70A Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Return-Path: Received: from postoffice.harvard.net by synchro.com with POP3 (Mailtraq/1.1.0.1036) id SYNC6386C6CA; Mon, 26 Apr 1999 14:31:22 -0400 Received: (from root at localhost) by airsupply.harvard.net (8.8.8/8.8.7) id NAA28106 for postmaster at synchro.com; Mon, 26 Apr 1999 13:32:28 -0500 (EST) Received: from gov.ns.ca (ns.gov.ns.ca [198.166.215.2]) by airsupply.harvard.net (8.8.8/8.8.7) with ESMTP id NAA27690 for ; Mon, 26 Apr 1999 13:31:16 -0500 (EST) Received: from gov.ns.ca ([198.166.84.8]) by igate1.gov.ns.ca with SMTP id <17098>; Mon, 26 Apr 1999 15:31:10 -0300 Received: from NSGT-Message_Server by gov.ns.ca with Novell_GroupWise; Mon, 26 Apr 1999 15:30:22 -0400 Message-Id: X-Mailer: Novell GroupWise 5.2 Date: Mon, 26 Apr 1999 09:52:03 -0300 From: "Jeffrey Pinhey" Reply-To: "JudgeNet - the beer judge digest" Errors-To: judge-owner at synchro.com Sender: judge at synchro.com To: JudgeNet - the beer judge digest Subject: Re: No Styles Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-MIME-Autoconverted: from quoted-printable to 8bit by airsupply.harvard.net id NAA27690 Apparently-To: judge at synchro.com X-Hops: 3 X-POST-MessageClass: 10; Mailing List Message Status: RO We have an annual competition (in club only) at Christmas. The entrant has to justify what makes the beer a Christmas beer. There is significant artisitic license allowed. It ends up being difficult to erase style from a judges consideration. I try to encourage the judgin to be something like a specialty beer contest (i.e. if it is a spruce bock - the spruce being the christmas tree - how good a bock is there undfer the spruce flavour?) that sort of thing. problem is, one can get beers, and we have, that have a Christmas association that is not directly related to the contents, but to the style. " A STOUT little man with a pot belly, that moved when he laughed like a bowl fill of jelly". We have also has a couple of innvative beers, including my favourite, humbug beer, where the brewer used the same spices used to make humbug candy (a traditional treat here at xmas time) in an amber ale, and hit the mark. The judging basically turns into a modified popularity contest because of the lack of reference points. --Next_Part_SYNC6496C70A--
