The San Andreas Malts have held 2 competitions where all they asked the brewer to identify was: OG/FG Use of Roasted or Black malts (% of grain bill) Type of yeast Hopping level (low, Medium, or High) Dry Hopped? Addition of "Special" ingredients (identified) Then the entries were grouped so that similar profiles were judged together and the judges were instructed to evaluate based on how well the entries "worked" as a final product. Flaws (contamination, etc.) should be pointed out but no "styles" were to be considered against which the entries should be judged. The simple example given to the judges was: "if you were given these as a sampler in a pub, which would you consider ordering and why or why not? The idea got a mixed reception but was enough of a success to warrant more such events. I would encourage such activity. RW...
